Good Trouble Coalition 2024
Indiana Statehouse Election Database Methodology

Candidates were scored on alignment based upon two information sources, in descending order:

  1. The GTC candidate survey (23% of candidates)

  2. Their vote record (if available) (57% of candidates)

  3. If they had no information for either of these data sources, we were unable to make an assessment- these were marked as “unclear” in the database (20% of candidates)

The GTC survey asked about alignment with GTC’s major mission areas: Public Health, Patient-centered care, and health equity. We surveyed all state house candidates- 23% responded to our survey. For those who answered our survey, this provided the data for our database. You can see in the table below the questions, how they were scored, and the overall scoring rubric (at the bottom of the table).

For incumbents who did not answer our survey, we used their vote record from the 2022 or 2023 legislative session. The bills were:

  • -  Vaccines: HEA 1001 (2022)

  • -  Gun Safety: HEA 1296 (2022)

  • -  Public Health Infrastructure: SEA 4 (2023)

  • -  Abortion: SEA 1 (2022 SS)

  • -  Gender-Affirming Care: SEA 480 (2022)

You can see the scoring rubric in the table below for how these scores were used for assessing alignment with our values.

Those candidates who had neither a returned survey or voting record were not scored and are listed as “unclear”. If candidates wish to fill out our survey to establish a record for this database, they can email goodtrouble@goodtroubleindiana.org.
